How To Turn A Roof Into A Rooftop Patio

How To Turn A Roof Into A Rooftop Patio

One question that we get asked is how to turn a roof into a rooftop patio. Rooftop decks have become much more popular in recent years, especially in areas like Vancouver where we don’t always have the luxury of space, so people are beginning to build up rather than out, and are opting for rooftop patios so they can enjoy every inch of their property.

Before you start getting carried away with ideas and proper planning, it’s important that you know what’s involved with transforming your roof into a deck so that you can work out whether it’s a viable option for you. Here are some insights into how to turn a roof into a rooftop patio, and what’s required to complete the job.

Step 1: Check your roof

The most important consideration when you’re looking to turn a roof into a rooftop patio is to figure out if it’s possible. Rooftop decks work with most flat roofs, and some sloping roofs in particular situations. If your roof is showing signs of damage and deterioration, you may need to strengthen the structure before you can install a deck. Your roof needs to be strong enough to handle the weight of a deck, especially if you want to install furniture or a hot tub, and you must make sure your roof is properly water resistant.

Step 2: Get a permit

You may need a permit to transform your roof into a deck. Contact your local building department to find out about any restrictions and the necessary steps. You’ll likely have to get detailed drawings created and consult your neighbours as well.

Step 3: Find a good carpenter

There are some things around the house that you can DIY – a rooftop patio is not one of them! Make sure you work with an experienced carpenter who knows exactly what’s required to turn a roof into a rooftop patio and who will do a great job.

Step 4: Decide on materials

The next step is deciding on materials. Talk to your carpenter about the best wood type for you, different designs, and which materials will suit your budget. You may want your rooftop patio to blend with the rest of your home, or you may decide to follow a completely different design so it feels like you’re on vacation. That’s up to you!

Step 5: Build, design, & enjoy!

Once you’ve decided all of the above, you can start the work with your carpenter and watch the project come to life!
